• Breast Cancer Mortality is second only to Lung Cancer as the deadliest cancer for women.
• An estimated 41,000 women will die of Breast Cancer this year in the United States.
• 213,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year.
• The average American woman has a 1 in 10 chance of developing Breast Cancer in her lifetime.
• Those odds can worsen greatly depending on lifestyle, family history, and estrogen exposure.
With early detection, breast cancer can be treated and even cured nearly 100% of the time. The recognized best method for early detection continues to be mammography and the American Cancer Society recommends an annual mammogram beginning at age 40. Women judged to be at high risk should begin having them even earlier.
Here are American Cancer Society Guidelines on how you can help yourself:
AGES 20 TO 39
• Monthly breast self examination
• Clinical breast examination by a trained professional every three years
AGE 40 & OVER
• Monthly breast self examination
• Annual clinical breast examination by a trained professional
• Annual screening mammogram
